22 February - 23 February

Wednesday, 22 February 2012

It was a overcast day all day, although we didn't get any rain until this afternoon. Which was nice, because otherwise we would not have gotten the 3 loads of laundry washed. There's rain on the forecast for the next couple days, so it's nice to be caught up again. (Okay, yes, this might mirror Mum's journal, but I feel like that, too! :))

There were two major excitements today (at least from my perspective), 1) when my new sheets came in the mail; and 2) when Dad got home with a new (used) fridge. There were two from the boy's perspective, too; 1) when Vince picked up the bails that he bailed yesterday, and 2) when Dad got home with 5 (!) bikes from a co-worker, some for parts and some that really work. The fridge looks like just the thing we want for in the kitchen, the actual fridge part is at the top and the freezer is at the bottom. Will certainly make it a lot easier for Mum to get things out without having to sit down and stand up so much!

Another sort-of minor excitement (or should I say, sadness?): today was the first anniversary of the second largest earthquake in Christchurch City. A day to remember, for sure. We were in Rangiora (just outside of Christchurch) when that earthquake hit. I was scared—it isn't really that fun to have the ground shake underneath you—and worried. Worried for the people of Christchurch. When we watched the news about half an hour later, we knew then that it was worse. Much worse. Worse than the first quake. Even though the first earthquake was a 7.1 on the Richter scale, and this one was 6.3, this one was a lot more shallow. This one was a lot worse. Quake-weakened buildings went crashing. In total, more than 200 people died. And that wasn't even the end. Even though we didn't know it then, there would be 3 more major quakes over the rest of the year. And even now, they still aren't completely stopped. The last major one was on December 23rd (another day to remember!), and we're still getting about a quake a day. I tell you, the earth's just about ready for the Saviour to arrive! Where Dad works, they held a minute of silence at ten till one to remember all who died as a result of the quake that changed all our lives forever. A year ago exactly, at 12:51 PM, an earthquake hit that shook the nation. A day to remember indeed!

What I did for school today:
  1. Read Bible
  2. Memorized Proverbs 31:19
  3. Started Dear Princess, read 5 chapters
  4. Read 4 pages of Antiquities of the Jews
  5. Read 3 chapters of Gladys Aylward, written by Janet & Geoff Benge (published by YWAM). A VERY GOOD BOOK!
  6. Wrote “Sardonyx” for Gems & Minerals booklet
We've had a pretty uneventful day today. Was nice to be able to get most of my school done!
Well, I should head off to bed. G'night!

Today was hot and windy — much different than the weather report said yesterday that it would be! (Which was NICE!) School went well today, I got almost all that I wanted to get done done. The only “not-so-nice” thing we found out today: the van we were looking at (that had a CD player) sold. We also got the report back on it, and it said that the van had “mechanical issues”. Maybe God protected us from the van by selling it, I don't know. Obviously, there's a better van for us out there.

What I did for school today:
  1. Recited Proverbs 31:10-19
  2. Read 5 chapters of Dear Princess
  3. Read 4 pages of Antiquities of the Jews. Found one interesting bit: (Talking about Aaron, the High Priest) “For as to those stones, which we told you before, the high priest bare on his shoulders, which were sardonyxes, (and I think it needless to describe their nature, they being known to every body,) the one of them shined out when God was present at their sacrifices; I mean that which was in the nature of a button on his right shoulder, bright rays darting out thence, and being seen even by those that were most remote; which splendor yet was not before natural to the stone. This has appeared a wonderful thing to such as have not so far indulged themselves in philosophy, as to despise Divine revelation. Yet will I mention what is still more wonderful than this: for God declared beforehand, by those twelve stones which the high priest bare on his breast, and which were inserted into his breastplate, when they should be victorious in battle; for so great a splendor shone forth from them before the army began to march, that all the people were sensible of God's being present for their assistance. Whence it came to pass that those Greeks, who had a veneration for our laws, because they could not possibly contradict this, called that breastplate the Oracle. Now this breastplate, and this sardonyx, left off shining two hundred years before I composed this book, God having been displeased at the transgressions of his laws.” Hmm...they “left off shining”. Interesting.
  4. Read 3 chapters of Gladys Aylward, by Janet & Geoff Benge. Quite the interesting story!
  5. Wrote Topaz for Gems and Minerals Booklet
  6. Made Rock Candy (haven't quite finished with the experiment, did something wrong so will try again tomorrow).
Well, I should go. Good night!
